Look closely at the world around us and it becomes unmistakable: the old systems and structures are collapsing, making way for something new. What once felt permanent and secure, now feels outdated. And if I'm honest, I think the traditional work world is long overdue for its own transformation.
This morning, as I listened to a podcast about how the world is changing, I found myself thinking about more than just the social, global and political shifts happening around us. My mind turned to the old stories and structures we experience in work and career, and how these are also due for a transformation.
The Old Story About Work
For decades, we've been handed a narrow definition of success:
- Climb the ladder.
- Earn more.
- Gain recognition.
- Work harder, give more.
We've been led to believe it's a trade-off, that you can either love what you do or be successful. That joy and ambition cannot coexist. That fulfillment is something you chase outside of work, in evenings and weekends, through side hustles and passion projects. I hear it constantly:
“This is what I do to survive. My real passion? That's on the side.”
But what if that story is outdated? What if the real shift happening in our world is this: success and fulfillment are no longer opposites.
The Radical Shift
What could be more radical than asking:
- What actually makes me happy day to day?
- What lights me up?
- What kind of structure and freedom do I truly want in my life?
And instead of dismissing those answers, what would it look like to build your work around them?
Focusing on what brings you joy does not mean sacrificing ambition. It does not mean giving up financial growth. It does not mean lowering your standards. In fact, when your work aligns with who you are, your energy expands, your creativity sharpens, your resilience strengthens and your contribution deepens.
Imagine This…
Waking up with a sense of calm excitement about your day, having work that gives you both structure and freedom. Imagine contributing in ways that feel genuine — to your workplace, your family, your community.
That world isn't fantasy. It's possible, but it requires something many of us were never taught to prioritize: self-awareness.
Real transformation in our careers begins with truly understanding who you are, what you value, what you need and what you desire.
Even If You're “Lucky”
You might already be in a good job where you feel valued, are recognized and are well compensated. Maybe you've built a career that others admire.
I know this space well. For 25 years, I worked in roles that matched my ambition. I was recognized for my capabilities. I found ways to use my skills and strengths inside traditional structures. From the outside, it looked successful.
And yet, there were seasons of burnout, difficult situations that left me drained and periods of deep reflection when I wondered “is this all there is”?
Looking back, I can see those moments weren't random. They were invitations and nudges reminding me that being wanted and recognized is not the same as being aligned.
You can be successful and still feel held back.
You can be valued and still feel misaligned.
You can be grateful and still want more.
Are You Ready?
Are you ready to let the old story crumble?
- Are you willing to explore what truly matters to you?
- To examine the passion project that won't leave you alone?
- To consider that your “side hustle” might actually be your calling?
One-on-one career and work-life coaching is my passion. It's the work that energizes me, challenges me, and excites me. I know firsthand what it feels like to sense there's more and to be unsure how to bridge the gap.
You don't have to leap overnight. You don't have to burn everything down. But you can start asking better questions. Together, we can explore:
- Where your passions truly lie
- What alignment would look like for you
- How to move from where you are now to where you want to be
The world is changing. The real question is — are you?
